Alison Hillier and Leone Clough
Joint Presentation
Students Studying SMART(er)
Alison Hillier is a Newcastle native and became a history teacher after a varied and interesting career in both public and private organisations including Juvenile Justice, NSW Lotteries and top tier law firms. While teaching high school students (particularly year 9 students) was her goal, fate intervened when she was asked to become a casual history academic shortly after she completed her degree with honours in 2007. A further career change came in 2011 when she was asked to join the Centre for Teaching and Learning as a faculty-based learning adviser. Alison’s chief interests are ensuring students from non-traditional backgrounds are supported in their initial year of study, and the role as Student Transition Officer provides teaching, research and outreach opportunities with students at this critical time. Alison has also completed postgraduate study at Macquarie University in Indigenous Education, which has broadened her understanding of pedagogical approaches which can be used to promote student achievement. Alison is currently developing a research proposal for an innovative method of reading and notetaking (which does not include the use of any electronic devices), and is hoping to complete her PhD before she retires. To relax, Alison knits (squares for blankets) and enjoys watching her cats sleep in sunny spots around the house.
LEONE CLOUGH
Leone Clough is a Learning and Teaching Librarian and Team Leader at The University of Newcastle. Her previous roles have been Acting Faculty Librarian for Education and Arts and Acting Faculty librarian for Law and Business. Leone has also worked in the technical side of libraries, Acquisitions, copy cataloguing and serials. However, her best moments while working in an academic library are working with students, not with ordering and cataloguing resources. Although, she understands what an important role the Acquisition and cataloguing librarians play in all libraries. Leone is very strongly student focused and is always pushing the boundaries when it comes to helping students with their studies.
Leone loves to read – anything, well almost anything! Leone will read online, in print, the back of people’s t-shirts and the Weet-Bix box in the morning, but curiously, never magazines or short stories. She works with librarians who do not read books, but they are in the librarianship business because they love order. Not so Leone.
WORKSHOP
Students Studying SMART(er) - Alison
This workshop will demonstrate simple strategies to help students, particularly those in stages 5 and 6, develop solid strategies to ensure they are ready for independent learning. By using modified SMART goals, learner theory and motivational techniques, teacher librarians can help students learn how to self-regulate their study habits and increase their efficiency during and beyond the HSC.
University of Newcastle Library Support - Leone
"This workshop will demonstrate how The University of Newcastle libraries can support high school teachers, librarians and students. Areas covered will include information literacy workshops/presentations, the Open Door Borrowing Scheme, the Hyperjinks information literacy program, finding journal articles, using NewCat+ and managing references". This workshop will also cover Leone's experiences of working with students straight out of high school and their concerns and attempts at writing their first essay.
